The Evolution of Our Relationship..

I Miss You..

The Impact when Caring and Technology meets

Technology..

This is what we use nowadays with out it we may feel incomplete. Even though it may be a simple smartphone nor MP3 player it still is counted. Information has become a capital good that is increasingly focused on outcomes. To achieve desired outcomes, clinical guidelines are being developed to standardize care for populations of patients. There is also a need to consider patients' preferences for possible outcomes when making care decisions with them. Current information technologies should allow documentation of both clinical guidelines and patients' preferences for planning care. The concern is whether nurses and patients can use information technologies adequately to access the information they need to make appropriate care decisions. Personally as a student nurse, I believe that when both caring and technology are combined it distributes to a effective plan of care because with the aid of technology it is faster and easier when it comes to documenting and even assisting. Nursing care is said to be improved through technology due to its safety, quality and efficacy. New technologies have the potential to improve the environment for nurses by helping them devote more of their time and expertise to caring for patients, rather than tracking down equipment, managing supplies, or locating clinicians and staff. Results are that these systems have helped to create a better workplace for inpatient nurses, raising their job satisfaction while also contributing to improvements in care. All of the hospitals that shared their experience planned to expand their use of these technologies, suggesting that the impact of such systems will continue to grow.

"Factors of Nursing knowledge on Health care Informatics"

First let us define Nursing knowledge and Nursing informatics:
Nursing Knowledge it is a clear and well-informed exposition of the philosophical background to nursing theory and research. It is data processed to become information which is then transformed into knowledge. Nursing knowledge is drawn from a multifaceted base and includes evidence that comes from science (research and evaluation), experience and personally derived understanding. While Nursing informatics is the use of information technology in nursing practice (Hannah, 1985).

The beginning nurse entering practice is expected to have computer literacy and basic information management skills. Computer literacy skill includes skills in use of word processing, healthcare database, and spreadsheet applications, presentation software, and email. Information literacy skills enable a nurse to locate, access, and evaluate clinical data. Access includes the ability to perform bibliographic retrievals using the internet and library based resources (McNeil et al, 2003).

Information technology skills of the entry level nurse include knowing how to use nursing specific software such as monitors, pumps, and medication dispensing; and information management for patient safety (AACN, 2008 pp 19-20). The constructs of implementing and maintaining health policies focus on privacy, security, and confidentiality of client information such as mandated by the health information privacy and portability act (HIPAA) and influence of all facets of NI.

Experienced Nurses should be skilled in information management and computer technology to sustain their specific area of practice. These skills include making judgments based on trends of data in addition to collaboration with informatics nurses (NI) in the development of nursing systems.

An informatics nurse specialist (INS) has advanced informatics  preparation at the graduate level and assists the practising nurse in meeting his or her needs for information (ANA, 2008). The informatics innovator also has advanced informatics preparation and possesses skills for conducting informatics research along with theory development (Thede, 2003).

Technology: to be controlled or to be in control?

“Do nurses control the information technology tools, or do the tools control nurses as users of technology”?

In this generation these gadgets are now essential in the society nowadays because they make life faster and easier. New gadgets keeps coming to the market with latest and advanced features every day and targets most of the population including Nurses. Nurses often deals with considerable stress throughout the course of their jobs so by using information technologies, it makes them easier to assist individuals with neat gadgets. Neat gadgets? I personally read this specific article on how would they use gadgets in the Operating room without contaminating them, the idea of autoclaving a gadget would definitely destroy it so they thought of using plastics that are sterile to cover them like the image below.

In my opinion, the decision is neutral because Nurses need these technologies by counteracting human error, putting nurses where they can be most effective and improving human behaviour  without it they can be putting their licenses at risk by doing errors in connection to nursing ethics. Nurses need these technologies but in the same time they don’t depend on it that much, they can use their abilities and critical thinking and what they have learned when studying the profession they have chosen in order to give care to patients.
